Bayfield School District Outlines Process for Selecting Next Superintendent

Following the announced resignation of Superintendent Dr. Dylan Connell at the end of the 2025–26 school year, the Bayfield School District has begun the process of selecting its next leader, with a focus on continuity, community engagement, and maintaining momentum in student achievement.

The Board of Education is working in partnership with McPherson & Jacobson, LLC, the same search firm that supported last year’s superintendent search. As a first step, the Board has posted for an Interim Superintendent to serve during a transition period. The interim position is designed to provide stability and leadership, but the board will also retain the option to extend the contract of that individual if they are deemed the right fit.

The application for Interim Superintendent closes May 8, 2026, and the Board is moving quickly to identify and interview top candidates. The job posting says the board is seeking a highly qualified educational leader who reflects the values and priorities of the Bayfield community. Desired characteristics include:

  • A student-centered leader focused on academic excellence, literacy, and college and career readiness
  • Strong relational skills and a commitment to engaging students, staff, families, and community members
  • Experience building collaborative cultures and supporting staff growth while maintaining accountability
  • An understanding of and appreciation for rural communities and the importance of community connection
  • Clear, transparent communication and a visible, accessible leadership style
  • The ability to lead strategic planning efforts and navigate complex educational challenges
  • Experience in school finance, policy, and resource management

Candidates are also expected to meet key professional qualifications, including appropriate licensure, leadership experience, and a strong background in educational administration.

Interim Superintendent Timeline

The Board of Education has established the following timeline for selecting an Interim Superintendent:

  • May 8, 2026 – Application deadline
  • May 12, 2026 – Board selects finalists
  • May 26–27, 2026 – Candidate interviews
  • May 26, 2026 – Community Meet & Greet
  • May 27, 2026 – Interim Superintendent selected
  • July 1, 2026 (or as negotiated) – Interim Superintendent begins service

The Board will work closely with district leadership and Dr. Connell in the coming months to ensure a smooth transition and continued progress on key initiatives, including implementation of the district’s Strategic Plan.

Additional details about the permanent search process and ways for staff, families, and community members to participate will be shared in the coming weeks.

The Bayfield School District encourages all members of the community to stay engaged and involved as the district works to identify its next leader and continue building a strong future for Bayfield students.
