Bayfield School District Announces Superintendent Transition

Dr. Connell has accepted a leadership opportunity with Abilene Independent School District in Abilene, Texas, allowing him to return to his hometown and be closer to extended family.

“It is with a mix of emotions that I share my decision,” Connell said in a message to staff and families Tuesday morning. “This transition represents both an exciting next step in my career and a vital opportunity to be present for my family.”

During his tenure, Dr. Connell helped lead the district through several key initiatives, including the development of a community-driven Strategic Plan and a renewed focus on student achievement. Those efforts were shaped by the voices of students, families, staff, and community members across Bayfield.

“Reflecting on our time together, I am incredibly proud of the milestones we have reached as a community,” Connell shared. “By integrating the voices of students, staff, and residents, we created a collective roadmap that will serve this district for years to come.”

Board of Education President Rebecca Parnell thanked Dr. Connell for his service and wished him well in the next chapter of his career, while expressing confidence in the strength of the Bayfield community and school system.

“The Board is grateful for Dr. Connell’s contributions to Bayfield School District during the past year,” Parnell said. “We understand and respect the opportunity for him to return home and be closer to family, and we wish him and his family the very best.”

Parnell said the Board is prepared to begin the superintendent search process immediately and is confident in the district’s path forward.

“Three of our five current board members participated in the superintendent search process last year, and that experience will serve us well as we begin this important work again,” she said. “We will use the lessons we learned to identify the best candidate to continue moving Bayfield schools forward.”

Dr. Connell was selected by the Bayfield Board of Education in spring 2025 and officially began serving as superintendent on July 1, 2025. Prior to joining Bayfield School District, he served as Chief Academic Officer in Durango School District and previously held leadership roles as a principal and assistant principal in both Colorado and Texas. He also began his career in education as a classroom teacher at the elementary and middle school levels.

The district has already begun discussions with McPherson & Jacobson, LLC, the search firm that assisted with last year’s successful search process. Board members said they are committed to a thoughtful process that invites community input and keeps students at the center of every decision. Under terms established during the previous search, the district is able to utilize a two-year guarantee that allows the new search to proceed without additional consultant cost.

District leaders will continue the work already underway this year while collaborating with Dr. Connell to ensure a smooth transition before June 30. Schools will remain focused on serving students well, supporting staff, and maintaining momentum on district priorities.

“My priority is ensuring a seamless handoff,” Connell said. “I am confident that the Bayfield School District is on a brilliant trajectory, and I look forward to cheering on your continued success from afar.”

Additional information regarding the superintendent search timeline and opportunities for community engagement will be shared in the coming weeks. Bayfield School District encourages families, staff, and community members to participate in the process as the Board selects the next leader for Bayfield schools.
