Supporting Our Students During Assessment Season

Standardized tests such as CMAS, NWEA, and PSAT provide valuable insights into student progress, and with the right support at home, children can navigate testing season successfully.

The Importance of Attendance and Preparation

Bayfield Intermediate School Principal Will Machallister stresses the critical role of attendance and punctuality during testing. At various times from April 7th through May 2nd, students in his building will be participating in CMAS and NWEA assessments.

When students miss test days or arrive late, they must make up the missed sections later, often in a different environment and sometimes completing multiple tests in one day. To help students perform at their best, parents should ensure their children arrive on time, well-rested, and ready to focus each morning.

"Please try to make sure your child has a good breakfast in the morning and is here at school on time, ready to do their best each and every day!" Machallister urged.

Why These Assessments Matter

Bayfield Middle School Principal Marcia Hoerl highlights the significance of these assessments in guiding both student learning and overall school performance. Tests like the PSAT, CMAS, and NWEA help measure student understanding, identify areas for growth, and inform instructional planning.

"Beyond individual growth, these assessments contribute to evaluating our overall educational effectiveness, ensuring we're meeting our academic goals and preparing students for future success," Hoerl explained.

How Parents Can Support Their Children

To help students succeed during testing, parents can:

  • Ensure On-Time Attendance – Avoid absences and tardiness to prevent students from missing their scheduled testing sessions.
  • Prioritize Rest and Nutrition – A good night’s sleep and a healthy breakfast with protein and healthy fats can help students stay focused.
  • Encourage a Positive Mindset – Reinforce that these tests are simply a chance to demonstrate what they have learned throughout the year.
  • Teach Stress-Relief Techniques – Simple strategies like deep breathing or taking short breaks can help students manage anxiety.
  • Plan a Reward – A post-test treat, such as a fun family activity, can keep students motivated.

Final Thoughts

Assessment season can be challenging, but with parental support, students can approach it with confidence. School leaders emphasize the importance of punctuality, preparation, and a positive attitude in helping students perform at their best.
